The Wine Advocate Rates All Ravines Wines 90+ Points

by

In June, Ravines and the Finger Lakes region received a big nod of confidence from The Wine Advocate’s Finger Lakes critic, Mark Squires. He wrote about Ravines, “One of the stars in the region, Ravines makes everything well, including reds. This was a stunning group, perhaps led by the amazing sparkler at a great price.”

When Squires toured the Finger Lakes in May to meet the top producers and critically assess a selection of their wines, many producers had wines score 90+ points, but Ravines was the only winery to receive 90+ points on all wines submitted (nine between 93 and 90 points!).

Squires was particularly enamored with our 2011 Sparkling Brut, which scored 93 points, the second highest of any Finger Lakes sparkling wine every recorded by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate publication. Squires wrote that the Sparkling Brut “… is complex, toasty and nuanced, with a long finish and seductive texture… For a wine like this at this price, buy as much as you can find.”

Equally lauded, our 2016 Le Petit Caporal is the second highest scoring red wine by The Wine Advocate ever, and one that Squires was taken by like few wines he’s had from Ravines or elsewhere as reds go from the Finger Lakes. “This is beautifully focused, tightly wound, intense and sporting a real backbone,” Squires wrote. “It has finesse yet density, power yet elegance. It tastes great and should age brilliantly.”

Squires also stresses in his review that Ravines wines are amazing values and age well over many years, including the Dry Rieslings. Besides mentioning that Morten Hallgren, winemaker and owner of Ravines, is still happily drinking his Rieslings going back to our first vintage in 2002, he writes about the flagship 2017 Dry Riesling, “The prices are reasonable, the quality is high and the wines are available (there are more than 6,000 cases of this, out of the winery’s 26,000 or so for 2017). Intense, focused and able to age, this is a classic expression of Riesling… You may need to put your name on one of those cases.”
